Originally a school built around 1850. Closing in 1982 the building remained open in a limited capacity until full closure was announced in 1987. However the local community protested and eventually convinced the council that a community centre was needed and after a renovation costing over £200,000, the centre had a grand opening on 15 December 1990.
The centre is grant aided by the City Council with the remaining funding, by the Executive Committee

Greystone Community Centre also holds various short courses (computer, first-aid, cookery) which are run by Carlisle College, St.Aidans & Trinity Adult Education and
St. Johns Ambulance as well as others.
